The Chimney Sweep Wedding Tradition

Everybody knows the stereotypical wedding traditional: something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue- however one tradition that the team here at Pearson Sweep recently stumbled upon included hiring an old fashioned chimney sweep to attend your wedding. As bizarre as it sounds, this is common practice at many weddings across Britain and we’re here to give you to the lowdown on the reason why…

Chimney sweeps who are invited to attend a strangers wedding will swap out their modern 21st century gear in favour of a boiler suit, top hat, black gloves and a dress jacket in order to channel the stereotypical Victorian chimney sweep. In fact, some even bring along an old fashioned wooden brush and smear soot over their faces to provide the whole shebang.

For a small measly fee of £100, a chimney sweep could be yours for the day! Their duties involve shaking the grooms hand, kiss the bride’s hand and taking photos with the happy couple. Why you ask? Luck of course!

Although the origins are difficult to track, the most famous tale dates back to King George II, a puppy and a noble steed. It goes that a dog nibbled at the legs of the kings horse during a royal procession, causing the steed to spook. Following this, a chimney sweep stepped out from the crowd, gained control of the animal and allowed the procession to continue before disappearing. The king was therefore unable to personally thank the chimney sweep for his heroic actions and thus stated that they should be regarded as lucky for that day forward. And everyone wants some luck on their wedding day!

Although we can’t say we’ve been invited to attend a strangers wedding as of yet, the team here at Pearson Sweep are still pretty good at sweeping chimneys. Get in contact with the best chimney sweep in Manchester today to find out more information about the service we offer!
